Chapter 8

Tania

By Sunday morning, after making breakfast for the two of them, Tania was tired and no longer felt that she wanted to go to the farm at all. But the plans had already been made, and Mila said she didn’t want to go alone, so Tania dragged herself into the car for the ride.

It was longer than she’d expected; they had to leave the city, then drive past the less-crowded suburbs and into land that looked more like places near where Tania had grown up, though her actual home had been tucked away in wooded wild and these were empty, hilly fields.

Finally, they got off the highway, drove through a small town, and then turned onto a long dirt road. The plants looked larger up close than they had from the highway, and Tania watched them go by, though without much interest, until they reached a house that was tucked away out of sight and Mila finally parked.

Tania got quickly out of the car and stretched. There were two other vehicles parked here, a small one with rounded shapes and a larger, dusty truck. Mila looked around as she slammed her car door, then walked up to the front of the house, but before she could reach the front door, a slender, pretty woman in dusty jeans and an oversized T-shirt came around the side of the house. “Mila!” she called, her face breaking into a bright smile.

Mila turned, echoing her smile. “Sara!”

Tania approached them with some trepidation, her stomach churning. She could see now why Mila had been so uncomfortable whenever the topic of this woman came up. The two of them had been lovers.

Or were they still? No, Mila wouldn’t do that to Tania.

Would she?

Mila caught Tania’s hand as she reached them. “And this is my girlfriend, Tania.”

Tania’s heart stuttered once in her chest, and then warmth spread from that spot, filling her. No, Mila would certainly not do that to her. She would, however, apparently surprise her with the declaration that she was her girlfriend.

Not that Tania was complaining.

Sara held out her hand, and Tania shook it. “Nice to meet you.”

“And you.” Sara’s slim appearance was as deceptive as Mila’s soft one; her hand was all muscle. Apparently working with animals made people strong.

“Well, you came to see the farm, didn’t you?” asked Sara, dropping Tania’s hands. “Come around and see the pigs, they’re in fine form today.”

“Are all the animals well?” asked Mila as they followed Sara around the side of the house. “You didn’t say whether there were any you’d like me to check on.”

“They all seem fine to me,” said Sara. “Everyone who was going to have a baby has had it. But I’d like you to at least give each of them a look, just in case.”

“Of course,” said Mila.

“So you check on her animals if they are sick?” asked Tania.

“That’s our trade,” said Mila. “I make sure the animals are healthy up until they’re killed, at which point I get to partake in their tasty flesh.
